Leash Life in Sweden: My Tuxedo Cat’s Outdoor Life and Beach Adventure

Hello, I'm Yulie! 👋

My old baby is my Tuxedo cat. While 'Tuxedo' refers to his distinct black-and-white coat, this pattern is often linked to a spirited, highly intelligent, and incredibly loyal personality, and mine certainly fits the bill!

When we moved here, it was during the pandemic. There was no restriction in Sweden, but it was not crowded at all in my neighbourhood.

So, I wanted my loyal companion to experience the beautiful Swedish outdoors safely. This meant transitioning him to an 'Adventure Cat' via leash training—a challenge that requires consistency, especially when preparing for trips like our successful run to the beach before the winter chill. In a dog-friendly country like Sweden, this adventure requires more than just a leash—it requires me to act as his personal bodyguard.

In fact, I expected him to get excited on the beach because he likes sand and he loves going to the playground... Even if I know he loves it, I don't want to bring him to the playground for the children's sake.

So, when he wants to go out, I take him on a leash and take him to a park nearby. In general, it is a short walk.

Maybe he is getting old, he does not want to walk far from home. So, I took him in a pet carrier for his beach adventure.

My cat feels comfortable walking around on a leash, but of course, he is not a dog. You can not expect a cat to walk like a dog...

Since he is asthmatic, I think he should get some fresh air sometimes.

I chose a weekday morning when the beach was nearly empty. Less noise, fewer people, and crucially, fewer dogs. This low-stress timing is essential for a cat's first exposure to such a vast, open environment. He used his intelligence to catalogue the new smells—saltwater, seaweed, and the faint scent of previous visitors.

We certainly didn't take a long, idyllic walk. I had to frequently put him back in his pet carrier and walk to several different spots until we found a location that didn't overwhelm his senses.

On the way back home, the wind picked up dramatically, and the temperature dropped quickly. In my focus on safety and scanning for dogs, I completely missed the subtle cues that he was cold and stressed. I knew he was truly uncomfortable when we arrived home, and I found he had pooped in the carrier. This was a clear sign that, despite my preparation, the intensity of the new environment was too much for a long outing.

The biggest hack I can share is this: An adventure cat routine is about consistency, not perfection. We learned from the carrier accident, adjusted our expectations, and we will try again when the weather is calmer. The loyalty and trust we built during the quiet pandemic walks are what make these big adventures possible.
