Beyond Detox: My 'Social Media Distance' Strategy Using Two Phones for Focus

Hello, I'm Yulie!

I often feel that we live in an era where information flows too quickly online. Someone else’s day, spending, workout, growth, news, or beauty routine is constantly visible. There are times when I find myself focusing more on 'what others are doing' than 'what I am doing.'

So, instead of completely quitting social media, I've chosen a strategy of creating distance.

My Two-Phone Distance Hack

I use two phones: one iPhone for my life in Sweden, and one Samsung Galaxy used mainly for Korean apps and blog management.

  • On the Galaxy, I intentionally keep the home screen completely empty of icons. To open an app, I have to deliberately open the app drawer.

Many people talk about a "social media detox" by deleting apps or deactivating accounts. However, I’ve found that this doesn't last long. Cutting it off completely often makes me think about it more, and when I inevitably return, I end up spending even longer scrolling than before.

The 'Creating Distance' Routine

My strategy is distance, not deletion:

  • Empty Home Screen: My home screen is blank.

  • Notifications Off: All social media notifications are silenced.

  • Hidden Apps: I deliberately place the apps deep within a second or third folder.

  • Intentional Use: I only open social media 'intentionally,' only when I have a specific need (e.g., checking a friend's direct message).

By using this method, social media stops being something I view automatically, and becomes something I view only by conscious choice. I aim to stop mindless scrolling entirely.

Especially as I think more about personal growth, I realize that the best routines are less about 'doing more' and more about 'being less influenced.'

The feeling that my day is filled with things I chose is becoming increasingly important to me.

I hope today is another day we can build slowly, bit by bit, in the direction we truly desire.

Thank you.
