The 24-Hour Rule: My Simple Habit for Stopping Impulse Buys and Mindless Spending

We live in an age where you can complete a purchase the instant you feel the desire. I found that I often bought things the moment I felt that "I want this" urge. However, very few of those impulse buys lasted. Items bought on a whim quickly lost their appeal and often just ended up cluttering my home.

This led me to adopt the 24-Hour Rule—my routine for not buying something immediately.

I don't typically make huge purchases often. Nevertheless, those fleeting moments where I feel something is "pretty" or "would be nice to have" still happen. In those instances, I do not purchase the item; I just add it to my wish list and leave it for a full day.


The next day, I look at the item again and ask myself once more: "Do I absolutely need this right now?"

In most cases, the feeling naturally subsides after 24 hours. The thought becomes: "I'm fine without it," or "Looking at it again, it's not really my style."

Conversely, the few things that I still think about the next day are usually items that are genuinely useful or needed for my daily life. In those cases, I proceed with the purchase, as I view necessary spending as just that: necessary.

Anyway, there is a bunch of beautiful stuff in this place, Scandinavian design items, or anything from a local shop. So, I will talk about my wish list sometimes.

I go out, walk around, enter some shops, see beautiful things, and put them in my wish list. Online shopping is also dangerous, but taking a look is free, and putting them in my basket is also free. That is kind of the pros and cons of the virtual world, giving likes is free, so I give likes to many things.

The best part of this routine is the sense of stability I get from knowing that I chose this spending—it’s not just the satisfaction of "saving money." Unconscious consumption is reduced, unnecessary items stop piling up in my home, and my mind feels much more organized.

My goal is not to be a perfect saver, but to build a slow, sustainable consumption habit that will last a long time.

I hope today is a day where we calmly observe what we truly need and what we don't.
