3-Day Berlin Budget Itinerary: Museum Island, Street Art, and the Last Minute Air-Hotel Hack

Hello everyone, I'm Yulie!

This post shares my Berlin travel story from late May/early June this year. It was my first time visiting Berlin, and I went specifically to take an in-person exam for one of my courses in the UNED Digital Humanities Master's program.

I had booked the trip about seven months in advance via a Last Minute Air-Hotel package, lining it up with my exam date, which naturally turned it into a 3-night, 4-day trip.

I was incredibly lucky that my trip coincided with the 200th Anniversary of Berlin's Museum Island! I explored the events with a friend from the Master's program, who showed me some other amazing local spots.

For the remaining days, I walked tirelessly on my own, determined to see almost everything recommended in a specific YouTube video I had saved. www.youtube.com/@RadicalLiving

Here is a summary of the packed itinerary I followed, even though I could not visit all the recommended spots in the video.

Day 1: East & Central Exploration

  • Friedrichshain & RAW Gelände: Explored the area for street art, graffiti (1UP).

  • East Side Gallery and the Oberbaum Bridge (the iconic double-deck bridge).

  • Mitte (Central Sights): Visited the Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe, the Brandenburg Gate, and the Reichstag Building.

  • The 100 Bus Hack: Used the cheap local Bus 100 route for a free sightseeing tour past the Kaiser Wilhelm Memorial Church and the Bikini Mall (where you can watch the zoo animals from the terrace!).

Food Recommendations:

  • Breakfast: Wahrhaft Nahrhaft

  • Lunch: Bürgermeister

  • Dinner: Zum Patzenhofer

  • Bar: Monkey Bar

Day 2: Museums & History

  • Mitte (Museum Island / Historical Center): Visited Museum Island, the Berlin Palace, and the Humboldt Forum.

  • Hackescher Höfe & Area: Hackescher Markt, the beautiful Hackesche Höfe courtyards, and watched the dancers at Monbijou Park.

Food Recommendations:

  • Breakfast: Zeit für Brot

  • Dinner: Curry 61

Day 3: Free Schedule & Brunch

  • Prenzlauer Berg: brunch at Oef., the Mauerpark Flea Market, and Kastanienallee.

  • Kreuzberg / Holzmarkt Area: the highly-rated local Döner Kebab and the creative area of Holzmarkt 25.

I managed to move around constantly and efficiently over the 3 nights and 4 days, with that YouTube video being a massive help!

Travel Summary

My Takeaway: Berlin was a completely new city for me, and the experience of mixing my Master's exam with travel was unique. I realized that even with a last-minute booking, a little bit of advance planning ensures you can have a full, high-value trip in a short amount of time.

🚨 Last Minute Warning: Always read the fine print! My booking included "breakfast," but upon closer reading, the small print indicated the cost of the hotel breakfast was not included. Lesson learned!
