My 15-Minute 'Verified Information' Habit: A Growth Routine to Fight Fake News
Hello everyone, I'm Yulie!
Lately, I've been experimenting with a small habit I want to re-establish: checking the news once a day.
Why I Started the Daily News Habit Again
I have lived outside of Korea for a long time since 2010. During my time here in Sweden, I naturally got into the habit of listening to local news on the English radio. Now, I often just turn on the Swedish evening news on TV.
However, I found it difficult to keep up with Korean news specifically. When I would visit Korea, I’d often feel uncomfortable thinking, “I don’t really know what’s going on in my home country.”
So, my solution was not to try to consume everything but to listen to a news source that explains the key headlines simply, just once a day.
My Low-Effort, High-Value News Sources
I limit this routine to about 15–30 minutes total each week.

I listen to the summary of major political, economic, and social news.
The content is explained quite simply, making it easy to absorb without feeling overwhelmed.

I watch the short evening broadcast or catch up over the weekend.
My approach is passive listening, similar to how I used to listen to the radio.
The Most Important Reason: Filtering Out Noise
The most critical reason I wanted to rebuild this news habit is the overload of online information.
The internet is flooded with fake news, exaggerated claims, and emotionally biased interpretations. It’s dangerously easy to get swept up in sensational information after just a few scrolls.
So, I set a strict personal standard: "Information should be sourced as close to primary data as possible and come from verified sources."
Instead of relying on summaries created by others or public opinion in social media comments, I prefer this structure: Verified News Source → My Own Judgment. I feel this structure is much healthier for personal growth.
This routine may not look like dramatic growth to others, but I will continue to build on these small, bit-by-bit routines moving forward.
